about

"Ethics + molars" is a previously unreleased outtake from Islands debut album from 2006, Return to the Sea. Recorded in the summer of 2005 at Breakglass studio in Montreal. Fittingly, we smashed a giant mirror in the main room, which you can hear on the song. (I guess we got 7 years of bad luck for that one?) We also recorded the drums on the roof of the recording studio, and matched the tempo of the song to the flutter that occurred between the two neighboring (and taller) buildings the studio was sandwiched between. The point is, we were having fun with it.

One day I'll probably compile an album full of outtakes and b-sides from 2006-2016. Until then, enjoy this one.

lyrics

Why do they want me dead?
i'm just an acid head
"they think you're killer bees"
my honey said
so I run run away
blow all my things
and sing "you're never gonna get me"
all my friends upset me
they plucked out the feathers in my wings
ooo ooo
ethics and molars
cavity dwellers
LSD in the CIA
they track me
but i removed the bug
i'm not a thug
i'm a dope mc
ooo ooo
dying to be set free
but they're all out to get me
just like they got biggie
and i'm not coming home
in a pinebox
to have my autopsy lost
don't despair
paranoia is everywhere
so it was you all along
who made good off of my songs
they wanted me shut down
so you spun my words around
why did they want me dead?
i was just a singer underfed
i didn't control the minds influenced by what i said
i was just dying to be set free
am i losing my mind
am i losing my mind?
or is my mind losing me?
dying to be set free
you were out to get me
just like you got biggie
you put it on my toes
it was my word against yours
and now nobody knows
don't despair
the evidence is everywhere

Breakglass was still under construction and there was fiber glass everywhere. Probably should have called it Fiberglass. Jace Lacek who co-owned studio and fronts Besnard Lakes played that crazy guitar on the song. Mark Lawson produced it with Jamie Thompson and I. Jamie on drums, I'm singing and playing guitar. Jim Guthrie played guitar, too. Who else? Tim Kingsbury on bass? Honestly don't remember..
